about

Bob Crain had been a member of the Phoenix, Arizona-based alternative rock band Fine Science in the 1980's (you can find releases by them here on Bandcamp). After the breakup of Fine Science in 1990, Crain moved east to the DC area. The tracks on this album were written during a transitional period in his life. Some of them later became songs for his mid-90's band Toast, of which Fine Science guitarist/vocalist Todd Osborn was also a member. Bob and Todd have collaborated on and/or participated in multiple projects over the years (Wavestar Motion Fabric Dudes, Unola, Phoresis, The Trans Fatty Asses, as well as Bob's main current band, Conduit).

The Art Of Waiting is a collection of some of the finest song material from Crain's lengthy musical career. A committed DIY recordist, he captures the songs here with a rawness and urgency that serves them well. The set invokes a wonderful flow from the catchy rock riffs of I Was Waiting and Guess I Was Wrong to tempered pop gem Spring Cleaning of The Mind, and dotted throughout with introspective mood pieces like In The Greenfield and Three More Worlds. The "second side" is mostly instrumental except for the aforementioned Spring Cleaning Of The Mind and the experimental angularity of Tulip In The Light.

The album as a whole fondly recalls the vibe of pop albums of Brian Eno and John Cale (both separately and together) with its penchant for infusing catchy rock-oriented songs with an inventive sensibility toward experimentalism.
